Kick Carcinoid Cancer in the Butt!

November 10 is Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Day ... the ribbon is the Zebra Stripe.

Why is the Zebra the mascot?

Doctors in medical school are taught that "when hearing hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras." Carcinoid Cancer and Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs) have been thought of as "rare" and, therefore, may be considered a Zebra.

My Diagnosis

I was recently diagnosed with Carcinoid Cancer.  I have had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for 15 years...IBS is one of the symptoms of Carcinoid Cancer, but that doesn't mean I've had it that long.  I am in Stage 4.

"Carcinoid cancer patients are often misdiagnosed for 5 years.  Due to the delay in diagnosis, when they are correctly diagnosed, it has reached Stage 4."

How did I find out I have cancer?

I was having pain in my breast and also where a hernia was removed years ago.  While testing these two areas, Carcinoid Cancer was detected in my liver.  Surgery, if possible is the preferred initial intervention.  Unfortunately, since I was so late in being diagnosed, and since there are so many tumors in my liver, my liver cannot be operated on.  I recently started Octreotide monthly shots.

Since this was written in 1980, I don't know how
up-to-date this info is...but it would be interesting to try!

This is the Handsom Elementary School for white children, located in Southampton County, Virginia (VA).  It is now a private residence.

Unique and quirky.  Historical.  No wasted hallway spaces.  Each room leads into another room.

The best part of it all?  It is my home and studio!

Miniature Doll Vest Made With Yo-Yo's (Suffolk Puffs)

Years ago I was in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and came across town-after-town having flea markets and craft shows. It was my lucky day when I entered a school and came across this adorable yo-yo (Suffolk puffs) vest for a doll. It is made of 46 miniature yo-yo's. Sorry, it isn't for sale (shucks)! I hope you enjoy the pics! Click each one to see them larger.

Crocheted Kaleidoscopes

Becky Hayes @ Rijksmuseum

I made numerous crochet and lace kaleidoscopes from photos I downloaded from the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands.  They let you download their photos and make items, such as T-shirts, phone covers, etc. from their photos.  They even offer you a "studio" to keep track of your favorites - and you can upload your designs to share what you make.

I decided to download various clothing photos that had crochet and lace items in them.  Here are a few of the kaleidoscopes I made.  Be sure to visit their museum to download photos to design your next creative project!

I have more kaleidoscopes than I have posted! You can click each image to go directly where I sell them.  To visit Rijksmuseum, click on their logo at the top of this post.

Stock Photography

Becky Hayes @ Shutterstock

I have over 2,600 images at Shutterstock, which is a stock photography agency. Here is one of my favorites. I took a photo of a neon sign and made it into a kaleidoscope.  Then I took the kaleidoscope and made it into a circle ball.
